The Alternative Space and Youth Literature

During 2011 the Alternative Space B&B sponsored the publication of its first youth novel. This book was written and illustrated by 10 years old Aaron Rörich. The following is an extract from the

book  "The Little Snake's Journey Through the Namib Desert"  Published by Aaron Rörich from Swakopmund.

“There was nowhere to hide, when we saw this large bird circling over our heads. We knew we were in very serious trouble. So, we tried to make ourselves invisible by curling up and pretending that we were rocks.” hissed Sweety.

“We were very scared!” peeped Sally.

“But, Patricia saved us.” hissed Sweety from behind the rock.

Sweety’s two friends seemed amused by this comment. Charlie continued:

“Suddenly, just when we thought it was all over, there was this great big shadow over us. We looked up and saw a big wooly cloud hanging low over us. It was Patricia, the old granny sheep.”

“Her eyes are very bad, and she did not realize that she was standing right over us” commented Sweety with a hiss.“ But, she saved us from the big bird.”

“Patricia was the loveliest animal we met so far” said Sally, more to herself than to anybody specific. She continued:

“Patricia had gentle eyes and a deep voice. She was always smiling, and it seemed as if the whole world was colored pink when

she talked to you. Her best friend was old Scraggy, the ostrich”

“All three of us got onto Scraggy’s back, and she carried us all the way down to the beach.” said Sweety.

“And in the distance we could still see the horrible bird that wanted to eat us” said Charlie.
